Samina smiled as she walked out of the supermarket. She'd worked two shifts there already and managed to not get fired yet. It was kind of nice, the owner was nice enough to let her work a shift that meant she could get out before midnight and she got payed at the end of each shift. This was a good job but she knew if she put one foot wrong, if she missed a shift or if someone complained about her she would yet again lose a job. This was what she was used to, to even have a job, to get so many jobs and continually find new ones was pure luck for her and there was always a high chance she wouldn't have it long.
She stood at the bus stop, bending her pass nervously as she watched people give her looks, some of curiousity but most ones telling her that yet another person hated her. She should have been used to it by then, the looks, the hatred, she had been a Chrome for a year now but it was hard to get used to it completely. She was almost fully pressed against the brick wall of a building when the bus finally arrived. She hopped onto the bus quickly, keeping her head down as she waved her bus pass in front of the machine and walked right to the back of the bus.
As she sat down on the very back seat an old lady two seats in front moved all the way to the front of the bus. Mina sighed and looked down at her lap, wishing she could be invisible for once. She knew that she would get just as bad reactions when she pressed the bell as her stop came up and when she had to walk to the middle of the bus to go out the back door.
Once she was inside her room things would be better. She was going to stay at the same motel she did the night before. The motel was old, the paint of the building peeling, the doors almost falling off their hinges and the inside of the place was just as horrible. The motel was a place to sleep though, the owner didn't care that Mina was a Chrome and they served breakfast for free. It was the best place Samina had found so far and it was cheap.
As she walked into the motel the owner looked up at her. The front room was about the nicest thing in the motel. There were a few chairs and a couch in the corner with a coffee table covered in old magazines, very old magazines. The chairs and couch faced the wall where there was an older looking Vid. It wasn't the oldest one she had seen, she could remember the old televisions she had learned about at school. Apart from that area, the only other thing in the front room was a desk where the owner was often found.
"You want the room again tonight?" The owner asked. His voice was rough and not one Samina liked the idea of hearing a lot.
Samina nodded. "Yeah."
The owner placed the key on the desk and Mina placed the money next to it before picking up the key. The owner counted her money before nodding at her and going back to whatever he was doing before she had walked in. She had to go back outside and walk around to the rooms. It felt like it had gotten even darker in the couple of minutes she had been inside. She walked quickly to her room and made sure to lock the door behind her. It was an old room, key locks and switches, none of the new technology Mina had grown up with. She didn't care. She didn't even both turning on the light as she got ready for bed.
